Another type, created by Iranian artist Sara Shoghi, explores the hidden identity of the LGBTQ+ community members living in Islamic States under Shari‘a Law. According to judicial laws in these countries, homosexual, transgender, and queer identifying persons risk fines, prison, and even execution as a consequence of their sexual and gender identity. This system forces them to hide their true identity from the public eye just to survive.
The composition frames the figure from just above the navel to the bridge of the nose, removing the eyes from the artwork and consequently the gaze of the model. With the removal of the eyes from the image to ground the facial features, Shoghi is inviting audience members to relate themselves to the figure – could this be someone they know or even a reflection of oneself?
Shoghi created this piece in response to the oppression of LGBTQ+ community members under Shari‘a law. As an ally, Sara Shoghi considered it her duty to critique laws that discriminate against individuals’ sexuality and gender, with the belief that awareness can change oppressive, repressive, and segregative laws.

Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
